Here’s a short glossary of some terms you may come across.
• Handmade—Constructed, but not necessarily knotted, by hand.
• Hand-knotted—Yarns knotted by hand.
• Hand-hooked or -tufted—Yarn inserted into a backing with a handheld tool. The pile is formed as loops, which then are sheared for a cut-pile surface.
• Flatwoven—Woven rugs (Kilims, Dhurries) that have no pile.
• Machine-made—Constructed by machine, usually computer controlled.
• Tufting—Yarns are stitched into a backing, by machine, leaving loops on the surface. The loops may be cut or left uncut, or be a mix of cut and loops. Virtually all wall-to-wall carpet is tufted; some area rugs are also machine-tufted.

Most better-quality outdoor carpeting is made from polypropeline; its stain, static, mold, and mildew resistance make it ideal for outside conditions. Polypropeline is extremely colorfast, easy to clean, and will withstand strong chemicals (even up to 50% bleach). Today’s indoor/outdoor is a far cry from earlier versions and comes in many variations. In most cases, the material is glued to the substrate and is best installed by a professional.
