Stone & Tile Laminate Flooring
Real Stone and Tile
Laminated stone or ceramic tile panels allow you to have real stone or ceramic tile floors at a lower cost and in a much quicker time than traditional stone or tile floors. These new laminates are constructed much like wood laminate flooring: each “tile” or panel consists of a manufactured core which incorporates a tongue and groove type of locking mechanism. Thin slices of genuine stone, or thin ceramic tiles, are bonded to the core, usually several per panel/tile. Typically a wear-layer surface is added so no additional floor finish is necessary post-installation. Some manufacturers include an underlayment backing. If not, roll underlayment is needed. Read about underlayments.
Installation goes quickly and can be a do-it-youself project. The panels, like wood laminates, are snapped together, no extensive sub-floor prep or mastic is needed. It may be possible to install tiled laminates over your existing floor, but we can advise you as to the pros and cons for your particular situation. In any case, the floor/subfloor needs to be reasonably level and smooth, and underlayment—as mentioned—will be necessary.

Another plus for tiled laminates is that their lighter weight means no extensive floor support is necessary and they can be installed in locations where solid, full-weight stone or tile would not be advisable. However, the manufactured core may prohibit their use in very damp areas—check the manufacturer’s quide(s) for the flooring of your choice before final decisions are made.
Realistic Photo-reproduction Stone & Tile
Like a cross between laminated flooring and vinyl flooring. The construction is like that of genuine stone or ceramic laminate tiles, but the decorative layer is a composition material, with a photo-realistic surface which perfectly mimics real stone or tile. These panels/tiles are even lighter in weight and easier to handle than the stone/ceramic laminates, and installation is much the same—snap into place, no glue needed. Another great D-I-Y option!
Like other laminates, underlayment is highly recommended, installation may be possible over an existing floor, sub-flooring needs to be reasonably level and smooth. We can help you figure all this out once you narrow down your choices.
