Vinyl

Roll vinyl, vinyl composition tiles (VCT), glue-on or peel-&-stick, and cork in glue-down tiles or floating panels are tops for resilient, easy to maintain flooring. Both are available in a wide array of colors and patterns—enough to suit the most discriminating taste, and fit every budget.

Vinyl—The vinyls are produced primarily via 2 processes, inlaid (an older process) or rotogravure (the most common method today). Inlaid vinyl is made by embedding colored vinyl chips into a carrier sheet, bonding them by means of heat and pressure, and adding a clear wear-layer on top. In the rotogravure process, the pattern is printed onto a core layer, and the clear wear-layer is added. Rotogravure offers more flexibility in pattern types. In both cases, the durability depends on the quality of the clear wear-layer.

Durability—The wear-layer is critical to a vinyl’s durability. The wear-layer is measured in mils (1 mil is roughly as thick as a phone directory page)—the thicker the wear-layer, the tougher it will be. Generally, more expensive vinyl floorings will have a thicker, more durable wear-layer. Keeping the floor clean and free of grit is key to the longevity of your vinyl flooring.

Cork

Cork flooring is beautiful, tough, bacteria resistant, hypoallergenic, sound absorbing, and comfortable. Cork is the bark of the cork tree (Cork Oak) which grows mainly in the Mediterranian regions. It's enjoying a growing popularity becasue of its ecologically sound production and growth processes. Cork trees live many hundreds of years and can have their bark harvested every 9 to 15 years without being harmed.

Rubber

Last among this list of resilient floorings is rubber. Rubber flooring comes in a variety of colors, in sheets or tiles. Obviously a niche product, rubber flooring is virtually indestructible, quiet, and cushiony. It is somewhat more expensive than other resilient flooring options and requires professional installation. We can special order it and have delivered within days.
